All of the structures below depict the backbone of the alpha subunit of hemoglobin in white and the beta or gamma subunit in salmon. N termini are colored blue and C termini are colored red. Heme groups are in ball and stick and colored in cpk. Residues that form the diphosphoglycerate binding site are in light cpk. Measurement is depicted between two atoms that form a salt bridge when in close proximity.
